- Accelerometer
- The sensor component inside the mouthguard's sensor board that measures linear (straight-line) force during an impact.
- Angular acceleration (Rotational force)
- A measure of how much the head spun during an impact, recorded in radians per second squared (rad/s²). Emerging research suggests rotational force is closely linked to concussion risk, in some cases more so than linear acceleration alone.

- Boil-and-bite
- A one-minute self-fitting method for the mouthguard, offered as an alternative to a custom dental-scan fit. Suitable for athletes aged 10 and up, any sport.

- CCC (Concordance Correlation Coefficient)
- A statistical measure of how closely the mouthguard's readings agree with a calibrated laboratory reference sensor. In an independent four-way evaluation by Leeds Beckett University, the Prevent iMG recorded a CCC of 0.984 - the highest of all systems tested.
- Charging case
- The team-level hardware used to charge and store mouthguards between sessions. Holds up to 27 mouthguards simultaneously.
- Concussion protocol
- The Canada/USA term for the structured process a medical team follows after a potential head injury, from initial assessment through return to play.
- Custom-fitted mouthguard
- A mouthguard manufactured from a dental impression or 3D intraoral scan to match a specific athlete's bite - the same process and protection standard as a premium custom sports mouthguard, with the sensor board built in.

- g / g-force
- The unit used to measure linear acceleration - the same unit used to describe forces on fighter pilots and astronauts.
- Gum shield / Smart gum shield
- The common term for an instrumented mouthguard in the UK, Ireland, South Africa, and Australia - used naturally by the BBC, The Guardian, and World Rugby.
- Gyroscope
- The sensor component inside the sensor board that measures rotational movement, used to calculate angular acceleration.

- HAE
- Used across research and press coverage to mean two related but distinct things: Head Acceleration Exposure - the accumulated load a player absorbs across a session or season - and Head Acceleration Event(s) - an individual, countable impact (e.g. "17,000 head acceleration events" in the ORCHID study). Confirm which meaning applies before citing a specific figure.
- HIA (Head Injury Assessment)
- The structured clinical evaluation an independent medical officer conducts when a player is flagged for a possible head injury. Term used in the UK, Ireland, Australia, and New Zealand. From January 2024, World Rugby mandated instrumented mouthguard data as part of the official HIA protocol in elite competition.
I
- iMG (Instrumented Mouthguard)
- The clinical and research term for a mouthguard with a built-in sensor board that measures head impacts in real time. Used by World Rugby, in peer-reviewed literature, and interchangeably with "smart mouthguard" in consumer-facing content.
- IMM (Impact Monitoring Mouthguard)
- An alternate term used in some Prevent product and blog content for the same device described elsewhere as an iMG. Recommend standardizing on one term site-wide.
- Impact count
- A running tally of every recorded impact across a session. Captures the smaller hits that don't make the highlight reel, which can add up in cumulative significance.
- Impact direction
- Which way the athlete's head was moving at the point of collision, giving clinicians context for how the injury may have occurred.
- Impact location
- Where on the head - front, side, or back - the force of an impact was greatest. Different locations carry different injury risk profiles.

- Linear acceleration
- The straight-line force of an impact - how hard the head was pushed in one direction. Measured in g-force.
M
- Mouth guard
- Two-word spelling commonly used in Australia and the United States, typically in football and youth-sport content.
- Mouthpiece
- US-specific term, most often used in American football and individual-athlete contexts.

- NOCSAE headform
- The standardized test headform World Rugby used, alongside five-degrees-of-freedom testing, in its independent laboratory evaluation of competing instrumented mouthguard systems.

- ORCHID study
- A joint research project between World Rugby, the University of Otago, and New Zealand Rugby. Captured more than 17,000 head acceleration events across 300+ players from under-13s to senior elite level, and contributed directly to the January 2024 HIA mandate.

- PPV (Positive Predictive Value)
- The proportion of flagged alerts that correspond to a genuine head impact, as opposed to a false positive (e.g. chewing or shouting). Independent research reports PPV values in the range of 0.76-0.98 depending on the study.
R
- rad/s² (Radians per second squared)
- The unit used to measure angular (rotational) acceleration.
- Return-to-learn protocol
- Australian term for the graduated process of returning a student athlete to academic and cognitive activity following a head injury.
- Return-to-play protocol
- Canada/USA term for the graduated, staged process of returning an athlete to competition after a head injury.

- Sensitivity
- The proportion of genuine head acceleration events the system successfully detects. Independent NCAA football validation reported a sensitivity of 0.89.
- Sensor board
- The small internal component built into the body of the mouthguard, containing the accelerometer and gyroscope that capture impact data.
- Smart mouthguard
- The consumer-facing term for an instrumented mouthguard (iMG) - used interchangeably in press coverage and marketing content.

- TaCKLE project
- A Rugby League deployment study run with the RFL, Super League, and Leeds Beckett University, covering roughly 1,000 mouthguards annually across 40 teams in the UK and France.
